ASSIST OR ATTEND?

Don’t fall into the trap of saying assist, instead of attend! The verb assist means to help!

TO BE IN CHARGE OF

When talking about meetings, you can also use the verbs to run or to lead a meeting.

TO WRAP UP

Careful of the silent w, in wrap; we say /rap/. To wrap up in a different context also means envolver.

GRAMMAR

It's (un)likely that...

When talking about probability in English, we normally avoid using the literal translation It’s probable that…. A much more commonly used structure is It’s likely that followed by the future tense. Practise the pronunciation of likely /láiklii/ and you’ll be much more prepared for any meetings you might have in English!

And how would we say No es probable que…? We can add un- in front of likely and use the structure in exactly the same way! Go back and do the translations again, this time in the negative, using unlikely /aanláiklii/. If you want to translate them a third time, you also have the option of using not likely!

Now take a look at these examples!

Es probable que vayan a convocar una reunión.

It’s likely that they’re going to call a meeting.

Es probable que vayan a cancelar la reunión.

It’s likely that they’re going to call off the meeting.

Es probable que adelanten la reunión a mañana.

It’s likely that they’ll bring the meeting forward to tomorrow.

Él dijo que es probable que esta tarde pongan una hora para la reunión.

He said it’s likely that they’ll set a time for the meeting later this afternoon.

¿Crees que es probable que (ella) asista a la reunión anual?

Do you think it’s likely that she’ll attend the annual meeting?

Es probable que la CEO cierre la reunión.

It’s likely that the CEO will wrap up the meeting.

Dicho esto, ¿serías capaz de entenderlo todo y de aportar un valor real en una reunión en inglés? Si la respuesta es no, lamentamos decirte que tu carrera profesional está limitada por tu falta de formación en idiomas. ¿De verdad quieres llegar lejos?
